AASuccess students partnered with Kieu Thu to host an interview with Virginia House Delegate Kaye Kory of the 38th district

On October 6th 2011, AASuccess students partnered with Kieu Thu to host an interview with Virginia House Delegate Kaye Kory of the 38th district. The interview was composed of three segments: Education, Jobs, and Human Trafficking. In the first segment, Delegate Kaye Kory spoke of her legislation to prevent further cuts from education funding, as it was detrimental to the cities and counties of Virginia. She stated that the more the state government cut education funding, the more the cities and counties had to independently raise money to put into the system or cut back the services that they offered in their public institutions. In order to advocate her legislation, Delegate Kaye Kory has been working with other legislators in Northern Virginia to form a coalition protecting education funding.

In the second segment, Kaye Kory discussed the importance of investing in education to establish a strong job market. She stated that continuous cuts from educational funding would result in an unstable system and make it difficult for students to find prosperous jobs and fulfilling careers. The reduction of state funds makes it difficult for universities to expand in terms of career training and skills development, which is detrimental to students searching for jobs. In addition, the job market is a dilemma because while universities focus on traditional career models, today’s society demands people with specific scientific skills. Delegate Kaye Kory proposes a solution or this predicament through increased investments in career training and through more business opportunities in Virginia. A robust public educational system is essential in order for students to be well prepared for their careers in the 21st century.

The third segment with Kaye Kory discussed the current issues of human trafficking in Northern Virginia, which is a surprising trend that most people are not aware of. In order to increase awareness, Delegate Kaye Kory has put in legislation for Human Trafficking Awareness Day every year on January 11. In addition, she hopes to stop and prevent human trafficking through a strong intrastate network with legislators in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
